Heavyweight | Clarivate Analytics IF correction, a journal plummeted 52 points!

In the academic publishing industry, the impact factor of journals has always been one of the important indicators for measuring the quality and influence of journals. Normally, at the end of June each year, Clarivate Analytics releases the latest Journal Citation Reports (JCR), which reveal the impact factors of each academic journal over the past year.

However, due to incomplete data and other reasons, some journals were unable to obtain the impact factors in a timely manner, or the impact factors had certain errors. Therefore, every year, Clarivate Analytics will conduct a revision in October and November, mainly including supplementary recording and revision. The impact factor of the journal shall be based on the revised version.

Recently, Clarivate Analytics made the final revision to the 2023 IF. Clarivate's explanation for this:

  Changes in influencing factors

After correction, it was shown that a total of 442 journals had changes in their IF. The journal with the largest increase after correcting the impact factor of 407 journals is CA-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, which rose from 503 to 521.6, an increase of 18.5 and remained at the top of the list.

After correcting the impact factors of 4 journals, the score exceeded 10 points:

Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine: The impact factor increased from 8.8 to 16.3, an increase of 7.5, surpassing the 10 point mark.

Hemisphere: The impact factor increased from 7.6 to 11.9, an increase of 4.3.

Canadian Medical Association Journal: The impact factor increased from 9.4 to 12.9, an increase of 3.5.

Thorax: The impact factor increased from 9 to 10.8, an increase of 1.8.

The impact factor of 35 journals has decreased

It is common for influencing factors to fluctuate. But this time it was really surprising.

Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience: Impact factor drops from 57.5 to 5.5, a sharp drop of 52 points!

This dramatic change has not only attracted widespread attention from the academic community, but also posed new challenges to the reputation and future development direction of the journal. Friends who have submitted to this journal are facing difficulties.

Changes in IF of the Four Major Medical Journals

After this update, the impact factors of the four medical journals NEJM, LANCET, JAMA, and BMJ have not fluctuated significantly:

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and LANCET still rank high.

JAMA: Increased from 63.1 to 63.5, but slightly decreased in ranking.

BMJ: 93.6 has risen to 93.7, with a slight increase in ranking, demonstrating its continued strong influence in the medical field.
