The East Asia Summit Collaborative Research Initiative (e-ASIA) is a multilateral scientific cooperation mechanism among participating countries of the East Asia Summit, dedicated to promoting international collaborative research and exchanges among researchers in ASEAN and surrounding regions through multilateral cooperation. According to the agreement reached with e-ASIA, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) will fund multilateral collaborative research projects in 2025 to support scientists in conducting innovative research and cooperation. 1、 Project Description
(1) Funding fields and application codes.
Applicants can independently select topics for collaborative research in the following fields:
1. Hydrogen energy (production and storage, biohydrogen production and waste hydrogen production), biofuels and aviation fuels, as well as energy storage. Application code 1 requires the selection of subordinate application codes B08, B09, E02, E04, E06, or G0314.
2. The application of emerging technologies in disaster risk prevention and management. Application code 1 must select the subordinate application codes D01, D04, D05, D06, D07, E0810, or G0409.
3. Infectious diseases and immunology (including antimicrobial resistance). Application code 1 must select C01, C08, C18, or H subordinate application codes.
Applicants must accurately fill in the application code. Applications that do not fill in the designated application code 1 as required will not be accepted.
(2) Funding scale.
Approximately 9 collaborative research projects are planned to be funded.
(3) Funding intensity.
The Chinese side's funding intensity shall not exceed 2 million yuan per item (direct expenses), and the funding includes research funds and international cooperation and exchange funds. Foreign collaborators will receive corresponding funding from domestic funding institutions.
(4) Funding period.
The funding period is 3 years, and the research period in the application should be filled in from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028.
2、 Applicant Requirements
According to the Management Measures for International (Regional) Cooperative Research Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the applicant of this project must meet the following conditions:
(1) The Chinese applicant should hold a senior professional and technical position (title), and be the project leader who has undertaken or has undertaken a National Natural Science Foundation project for a period of 3 years or more.
(2) Foreign collaborators should meet the qualification requirements of their corresponding funding institutions for domestic applicants, as detailed in the English guidelines for the respective funding fields.
(3) The number of domestic cooperative research units shall not exceed 2.
(4) All parties involved have a solid foundation for cooperation, and project applications should reflect strong collaboration and complementary advantages.
(5) For more information on applicant requirements, please refer to the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guidelines".
3、 Regulations on Restricted Application
The National Natural Science Foundation of China's international (regional) cooperative research projects include inter organizational international (regional) cooperative research projects (hereinafter referred to as inter organizational cooperative research projects) and key international (regional) cooperative research projects. This project is an inter organizational collaborative research project, and the applicant must comply with the following restrictions when applying:
(1) The applicant can only apply for one international (regional) cooperative research project in the same year.
(2) The person in charge of an international (regional) cooperative research project shall not apply for this project as an applicant.
(3) This project is not included in the scope of applying for and undertaking a total of 2 projects by senior professional and technical personnel (title).
(4) Other restrictions on the number of applications in the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guidelines".
4、 Declaration Instructions
(1) Attention for applicants.
The project application should include at least three researchers from different countries (see English guidelines for cooperation in different funding fields), with one of them as the lead PI responsible for liaising with the e-ASIA Secretariat and submitting the English application for the project. The deadline for submitting the English application is 17:00 on March 31, 2025 (UTC+7) in Thailand.
In addition, regardless of whether the Chinese applicant serves as the main applicant or not, they must submit a Chinese application to the National Natural Science Foundation of China. To ensure the smooth progress of the application process, Chinese applicants need to pay attention to the following aspects:
Before filling out the application form, the applicant should carefully read the relevant content of this project guide and the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide". Project applications that do not comply with the regulations will not be accepted.
2. Applicants need to log in to the Science Foundation Network System( https://grants.nsfc.gov.cn/ )Fill out the "Application Form for International (Regional) Cooperative Research Projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Chinese Application Form") online. The specific steps are as follows:
(1) Select the "Project Leader" user group to log in to the system, then click "Online Application" to enter the application interface; Click the "Add Project Application" button to enter the selection interface of the science department to which the applied project belongs. Click "Apply for General Science Department Project" to enter the project category selection interface.
(2) Click on the+sign on the left or the "Expand" button on the right of "International (Regional) Cooperation and Exchange Projects" to expand the drop-down menu.
(3) Click the "Fill in Application" button on the right side of "Inter organizational Cooperation Research (Inter organizational Cooperation Agreement Project)" to enter the "Please Select Cooperation Agreement" interface. Select "NSFC eASIA (International Organization)" from the drop-down menu, and then enter the approval number of the fund project supported according to the system requirements. After passing the qualification certification, enter the Chinese application form filling interface.
3. Budget preparation requirements. Applicants should carefully read the budget preparation requirements in the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guidelines" application instructions, strictly follow the requirements of the "National Natural Science Foundation Funded Project Fund Management Measures (Caijiao [2021] No. 177)" and the "National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Budget Table Preparation Instructions", and truthfully prepare the "National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Budget Table".
4. Requirements for application materials. Applicants can submit electronic applications online without submitting paper applications. The applicant must upload the electronic version of the English application form jointly filled out and submitted with the foreign partner to the "Attachment" column of the Chinese application form and submit it together. Applications without this English material attachment will not be accepted. After the project is approved, the paper signature and stamp pages of the application shall be bound at the end of the "Funding Project Plan" and submitted together. The information signed and stamped should be strictly consistent with the electronic application form.
5. Cooperation agreement. After the project is approved, the applicant must sign a cooperation agreement (template attached) with the foreign partner to reach an agreement on issues of mutual concern such as cooperation content and intellectual property rights. The agreement should be submitted together with the signed and stamped pages of the paper application form and the "Funding Project Plan".
(2) Precautions for relying on the unit.
The supporting unit shall review the authenticity, completeness, and compliance of the application materials submitted by the applicant of the unit, as well as the target relevance, policy consistency, and economic rationality of the budget application. This project is included in the scope of paperless application, and the supporting unit should submit the electronic application form and attachment materials of this unit before the prescribed project application deadline.
Regarding the submission of the research integrity commitment letter and project list of the unit, please refer to the "Notice on the Application and Conclusion of National Natural Science Foundation Projects in 2025" for implementation.
(3) Project application acceptance.
The online application acceptance period for the Science Foundation Network Information System is from January 20, 2025 to 4:00 pm on April 2, 2025.
