On February 10, 2025, the launch meeting of the "Artificial Intelligence
Empowering Engineering Science Frontier Exploration" special project of the
Engineering and Materials Science Department of the National Natural Science
Foundation of China was held in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. The meeting was
hosted by Harbin Institute of Technology.
Artificial intelligence technology provides a new approach to solving
complex engineering problems. The establishment of this special project aims to
promote cutting-edge innovation in engineering science through artificial
intelligence technology. It focuses on the two key problems of multi-scale and
high-dimensional strong nonlinearity in complex engineering systems under
extreme conditions, and explores and researches the basic and application
foundations of intelligent analysis, optimization design, manufacturing process,
decision control, etc. It aims to develop artificial intelligence empowered
engineering scientific computing theory that greatly improves the accuracy,
efficiency, and stability of complex engineering systems under extreme
conditions, and solve the problems of inaccurate, inefficient, and unstable
traditional scientific computing.
The head of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science emphasized
in his speech that the role of young scientific and technological talents in the
field of artificial intelligence should be emphasized, and this special fund
should be directed towards more dynamic young scientific and technological
personnel (male<35 years old, female<38 years old). At the same time,
actively exploring innovative project management mechanisms, allowing project
leaders to adjust research plans based on expert opinions and suggestions, as
well as new discoveries and ideas during the research process, encouraging
original innovation and bold exploration, allowing for failure, and promoting
the application of cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies in
engineering disciplines.
The project leader shall provide a detailed report on the project
background, research content and technical solutions, scientific issues,
innovation points, expected goals and achievements. The attending experts fully
affirmed the significance of the establishment of this special project, and had
thorough discussions with the project leader regarding the research content,
technical route, and expected results of the project, and put forward specific
opinions and suggestions.

National Natural Science Foundation of China attended the meeting.
