The 2024 Special Project Review Meeting of the Life Sciences Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China was held in Beijing

On December 3, 2024, the Life Sciences Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China held a special project review meeting for the year 2024 in Beijing. Academician Zhang Xuemin, member of the Party Group and Deputy Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Academician Zhong Kang, Director of the Department of Life Sciences, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Wang Puyue, Deputy Director of the Department of Life Sciences, presided over the opening ceremony.

Vice Director Zhang Xuemin pointed out in his speech that the positioning of the Natural Science Foundation of China's special projects is to target major national strategic needs and provide timely funding for projects that focus on cutting-edge scientific issues and have innovative potential. He emphasized that the Party and the state have placed scientific and technological innovation at an unprecedented strategic height, continuously increasing investment in science and technology. The National Natural Science Foundation of China, as the main channel for funding basic research, carries an important mission and responsibility. We hope that the attending experts can use their academic confidence and judgment to provide valuable research funding to the most innovative and dynamic researchers, in order to promote major scientific breakthroughs in the field of life sciences in China.

Director Zhong Kang pointed out in his speech that under the background of the new era, the academic evaluation system is undergoing continuous updates and optimizations. I hope that the attending experts can attach importance to the "five new" characteristics demonstrated in the application projects, such as exploring new phenomena, revealing new mechanisms, developing new carriers, applying new technologies, and adopting new methods. With high-level scientific appreciation, they can select excellent projects that meet the positioning of the special project guidelines and truly have original academic ideas.

This review will be conducted in five groups based on four specialized guidelines: "Expert Recommended Original Exploration Plan", "Guideline Guided Original Exploration Plan - New Discoveries and Technologies in Cell Biology Research", "Virus Induced Human Autoimmune Tolerance Disorder and Pathogenic Mechanisms", and "Computational Neural Mechanisms of Human Cognitive Processes". The expert review team listened to the report of the project respondent, and after questioning and thorough discussion, voted to select the proposed funding project for this year, successfully completing the review task.
