The Collaborative Innovation Research Team Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China aims to attract and support outstanding foreign academic leaders to form and lead research teams in China, independently choose research directions, carry out innovative basic and applied basic research, promote international scientific research cooperation, and cultivate research teams that occupy a place at the forefront of world science.
1、 Project Description
(1) Funding Fields
Mathematical Science (A), Chemical Science (B), Life Science (C), Earth Science (D), Engineering and Materials Science (E), Information Science (F), Management Science (G), Medical Science (H), Interdisciplinary Science (T).
When selecting an application code, try to choose the second level application code (4 digits) as much as possible;
When filling out the application form, please accurately fill in the "keywords";
3. For applicants in interdisciplinary fields, please first select acceptance codes T01-T04, and then fill out the application form by selecting at least 2 application codes from A-H based on the research content. The application code can be found in the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide".
(2) Funding period
The funding period is 3 years, and the research period stated in the application should be from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028.
(3) Funding intensity
The direct cost of funding is 6 million yuan/item, and the indirect cost is 1.2 million yuan/item (direct cost of mathematics and management science is 4.8 million yuan/item, and indirect cost is 1.2 million yuan/item).
2、 Project application
(1) Application conditions and basic requirements
As the academic leader of a collaborative innovation research team, the project applicant should meet the following conditions:
(1) Having foreign nationality and holding a senior professional and technical position (title);
(2) Having internationally recognized academic achievements and influence, able to lead and organize research teams, and conduct innovative research in China;
(3) Ensure that the duration of research work in the supporting unit is at least 6 months per year during the funding period;
(4) Sign a declaration agreement with the supporting unit (if the applicant has a full-time foreign employer during the application stage, the foreign employer should be informed).
2. As the research backbone of the collaborative innovation research team, project participants should hold senior professional and technical positions (titles) or doctoral degrees, and their nationality is not limited.
3. Each project shall have no more than 4 research backbones and no more than 2 collaborative research units.
4. Project applicants and participants must comply with Chinese laws and regulations as well as various management regulations of the Natural Science Foundation of China during their work in China.
(2) Regulations on Restricted Application
1. Personnel with senior professional and technical positions (professional titles) shall not apply for or participate in more than one collaborative innovation research team project, national outstanding youth science fund continuation funding project, innovative research group project, and excellent research group project (formerly the Basic Science Center project) in the same year.
2. The person in charge of the National Outstanding Youth Science Research Fund Continuing Support Project, Innovative Research Group Project, and Excellent Research Group Project (formerly the Basic Science Center Project) who is currently undertaking or has completed the funding period shall not apply or participate in the application.
3. Participants with senior professional and technical positions (titles) who are undertaking collaborative innovation research team projects, innovative research group projects, and excellent research group projects (formerly the Basic Science Center project) are not allowed to apply or participate in the application.
4. As the applicant and as the person in charge, I am currently undertaking a total of one foreign scholar research fund project and collaborative innovation research team project.
5. This project is not included in the total number of applications and projects undertaken.
3、 Declaration Instructions
(1) Attention for applicants
The project application will be written online, with the following specific requirements:
Before filling out the application form, the applicant should carefully read the relevant content of this project guide and the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guide". Project applications that do not comply with the project guide and relevant requirements will not be accepted.
2. Application form filling path: Log in to the Science Foundation Network Information System( https://grants.nsfc.gov.cn/ )Select "Application and Acceptance", then choose the "Applicant for RFIS, ICFCRT" role, click on "Application and Acceptance" - "Application" in the menu bar to enter the application interface; Click on "New Proposal" to enter the Application (s) in Preparation page, select "International Collaboration Fund for Creative Research Teams" under "Science Fund for Global Challenges and Sustainability", then choose the field of the application project: "Application codes A-H" or "Division code T", and then enter the application form filling interface. The language of the application should be English (along with the Chinese title, abstract, and keywords of the application project).
(1) Budget preparation: Applicants should carefully read the content of the "Budget Preparation Requirements" in the "Application Instructions" of the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Project Guidelines", strictly follow the requirements of the "National Natural Science Foundation Funded Project Fund Management Measures (Caijiao [2021] No. 177)" and the "National Natural Science Foundation Project Fund Application Budget Table Preparation Instructions", and truthfully prepare the "National Natural Science Foundation Project Budget Table".
(2) Main text writing: The main text of the application must be written in detail in accordance with the requirements of the Research Proposal Outline for ICFCRT and relevant filling instructions.
After the applicant completes the application writing, they can submit the electronic application and attachment materials online through the Science Foundation Network Information System, without the need to submit a paper application. After the project is approved, the paper signature and stamp pages of the application must be bound at the end of the Project Plan and submitted together. The information signed and stamped should be consistent with the electronic application form.
Attachment materials:
(1) The project application agreement signed between the applicant and the supporting unit. This agreement requires the use of a declaration agreement template (attachment: Agreement), After the applicant signs, the legal representative of the supporting unit shall sign (seal) and affix the official seal of the supporting unit (note: affixing the official seal of the scientific research management department, secondary college and other departments is invalid).
(2) Provide electronic copies of 5 representative papers related to the application project that the applicant has publicly published.
(3) The employment contract signed between the applicant and the supporting unit should reflect the content of 1- (3) in the "Application Conditions and Basic Requirements" section of this guide, which states that the applicant "must ensure that they engage in basic research work at the supporting unit for at least 6 months per year during the funding period". If the current employment contract has not been signed or the signed contract does not meet the above requirements, when submitting the project plan after approval, the applicant must also submit the employment contract that meets the requirements. Otherwise, the Natural Science Foundation of China will not grant funding or terminate it.
(4) Project applications involving research ethics and technological security (such as biosafety, information security, etc.) must comply with relevant national laws, regulations, and ethical standards. Applicants must upload corresponding audit proof materials in the form of attachments.
(2) Precautions for relying on units
The supporting unit shall review the authenticity, completeness, and compliance of the application materials submitted by the applicant of the unit, as well as the relevance, policy consistency, and economic rationality of the project budget.
Before submitting the project application of our unit, the supporting unit needs to upload the "2025 National Natural Science Foundation Supporting Unit Project Application Commitment Letter" through the Science Foundation Network Information System, and confirm and submit the electronic application form and attachment materials of our unit item by item through the information system before the prescribed project application deadline. Please be sure to submit the project application list of our unit online within 24 hours after the deadline, without providing a paper version.
Please refer to the Notice on Matters Related to the Application and Conclusion of National Natural Science Foundation Projects in 2025 for the above precautions of the supporting units.
(3) Project application acceptance
The online declaration acceptance period is from March 1, 2025 to March 20, 2025 at 16:00 (Beijing time).
