Only half a year! Nature Communications earned 130 million page fee from China, and some units gave a reward of 500,000 yuan for one article?

  

  According to Web of Science, Nature Communications (January 1 to June 30) published a total of 6,350 articles in the first half of this year. Among them, Chinese authors contributed 2,672 articles, ranking first in the world, with the second place being the United States with 2,409 articles; and Germany with 925 articles.

  Calculated based on the layout fee of US$6,990 per article (approximately RMB 50,000), the total fees paid by Chinese scholars are nearly RMB 133.9 million.

  In 2024, Nature Communications published 10,749 articles, with a layout fee of £5090.00/$6790.00/€5690.00, equivalent to about RMB 49,550. The total revenue of layout fee exceeded RMB 530 million, of which nearly 1/3 of the layout fee came from Chinese scientific researchers.


  

  In 2025, among the top 25 institutions in China’s number of publications:

  The first place is the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES), which has published 784 articles;

  The second is the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UNIVERSITY OF CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, CAS), which published 307 articles;

  The third is Peking University (PEKING UNIVERSITY), which published 249 articles;

  The fourth is Tsinghua University (TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY), which published 228 articles;

  The fifth is Zhejiang University (ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY), which published 224 articles.

  Even if holidays are included, these top institutions can publish more than one paper in the journal on average every day.


  

  In 2024, among the Nature Communications publication institutions, it is also the first in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including 293 articles from Zhejiang University, 288 articles from Peking University, 284 articles from Tsinghua University, 243 articles from Shanghai Jiaotong University, 234 articles from Fudan University, 188 articles from Zhongshan University, 145 articles from Nanjing University, etc. These institutions have published a lot of documents and contributed a lot of layout fees.

  As early as March 18 this year, Springer Nature announced its results for fiscal year 2024, with annual revenue of 1.847 billion euros, an increase of 5% over the same period in 2023. Adjusted operating profit increased to €512 million, up 7% over the same period. The estimated revenue in 2025 will be between 1.885 and 1.935 billion euros, and the profit margin will remain at least 2024 levels.


  

  Nature Communications is a multidisciplinary comprehensive journal under Nature. It was founded in 2010 and published papers on biology, physics, chemistry and earth sciences. The latest impact factor is 15.7, JCR1, and Chinese Academy of Sciences District 1. The total number of articles published in 2010 was 150. After just over a decade of development, the total number of articles published in 2024 soared to 10,123. The publication fee for a single OA is 5,290 pounds/6,990 US dollars, equivalent to about 50,000 yuan.
